The use of biofeedback in rehabilitation has fallen out of favor recently. Insurance companies don't reimburse, so people shifted to favor neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). That doesn't mean biofeedback isn't effective. Biofeedback is amazing at helping restore volitional control, decrease muscle activity of overused muscles, and focus on appropriate muscular involvement in movement patterns. In this article and video, Russ Paine, PT, and I discuss how and why we use biofeedback with our patients.
